Grease (1978) It's easy to sneer at Grease and dismiss it as a relic of the '70s like Space Dust and The Bay City…

Arriving at the station, they get into the first car they see – which just happens to belong to a funeral party. The three mourners in Confessions from a Holiday Camp were all played by real-life siblings of Doris Hare. Eventually, the hippo explodes, hurling a naked Timmy into the swimming pool, where he is seen (but again not recognised) by Whitemonk. Prior to Pop Performer, a sequel called Confessions from the Clink was considered but never got further than production notes. Confessions - Of A Pop Performer / From A Holiday Camp / Of A Window Cleaner / Of A Driving Instructor DVDThe sight of him rolling around in an electric wheelchair, pinching bums and leering his way through his final performance as a hospital patient is almost painful, not to mention somewhat ironic, considering Askey had both legs amputated shortly after the film was made. Plumbing seems an agreeable enough occupation for Sid South (Christopher Neil) whose job offers him ample opportunity to bed a variety of nubile girls. Adventures of a Plumber's Mate (1978) Plumbing seems an agreeable enough occupation for Sid South (Christopher Neil) whose job offers him ample opportunity to bed a…

But they’re not long for the sweet life. The camp has been sold, and the new owner, William Whitemonk (John Junkin), is determined to run the place in his fashion – a fashion he practised for years as Chief Warder of Dartfleet Prison. This was the fourth and last of these cheap but cheerful comedies, with Robin Askwith returning as an over-sexed entertainment officer at a camp run by an ex-prison officer.

The guest stars (both in and out of bed) are of the usual Columbia calibre. Many faces are re-used from previous Confessions episodes, notably Liz Fraser as a dizzy housewife obsessed with winning newspaper competitions and John Le Mesurier as head surgeon Sir Archibald (more interested in the 3.30 at Newmarket than whipping out an appendix). Soft focus prettiness sits awkwardly alongside comedy capers with a skeleton, humping in hospital laundry baskets and patients mistakenly drinking urine samples. Confessions from a Holiday Camp is a 1977 is the fourth and last film in the series of risque comedy films that began with Confessions Of A Window Cleaner.

Deer Hunter, The (1978) One of America's first attempts to deal with the Vietnam War on film, Michael Cimino's masterpiece is long and richly… Confessions Of A Driving instructor (1976) The third in the series of smutty comedies based on the novels of Timothy Lea is something of an embarrassment… When production of Confessions of a Plumber’s Mate was cancelled, Rosie Dixon unknowingly marked Columbia Pictures’ last foray into British sex comedy. Knowing when to make their exit, Timmy and Sid grab a go-kart and drive off. As Timmy says, moments before they hurtle into the boating lake, “There must be an easier way to make a living!”. Inspired by primetime medical soap Dr Kildare, starry-eyed 18-year-old virgin Rosie Dixon (Ash) decides to become a nurse and enrols at nearby St Adelaide’s Hospital. The harsh reality of life on the wards is somewhat different from television, however, since the nurses are dominated by a tough, unfeeling Scottish Matron (Beryl Reid – wonderful as usual).

The Confessions films relied on a blend of saucy humour and ‘What the Butler Saw’-style smut (much loved by the Carry On team). Carry On Girls (1973) Carry On Girls conjures up the ultimate in wet and windy, bored and mindless seaside communities, Fircombe. The ever-enterprising Sidney Fiddler… He escapes into the camp announcer’s room, and – needless to say – the announcer (Kim Hardy) is a very shapely girl who is just dying for some attention. Timmy is happy to oblige, unaware that the sound effects of their love-making are being broadcast throughout the camp.

Sid’s boss, old Crapper (Stephen Lewis), sends him to change a toilet seat for the kinky Janice and, after more sexual skirmishes, our likely lad sells the seat to an antique dealer for 50 pence. Adopting the title Rosie Dixon – Night Nurse, the film was produced by experienced filmmakers Davina Belling and Clive Parsons, who spent over a year auditioning young hopefuls to take the leading role.

Sequel in Another Medium: Robin Askwith starred in a stage sequel entitled The Further Adventures of a Window Cleaner. Rosie Dixon‘s funniest moment probably happened off-screen. When the movie was nearing completion, Belling and Parsons innocently invited the parents of cast members Peter Mantle and Carolyne Argyle onto the set. What the Reverend W E Mantle and Judge Major Michael Argyle thought of their offspring appearing in a soft-core porn film was never reported.
