Description

Event open to novices and experienced orienteers alike. Dartmoor offers excellent, but challenging terrain, requiring appropriate care as it can become exposed in poor weather. If you are new to the sport, we will be delighted to see you, but you should enter one of our novice courses. Why was the new nun feeling unwelcome? She was not warmly welcomed into the convent by the other sisters. This simple description is super informative. It confirm the name of the O Brook is derived from Oak Brook, and so we can assume that sometime in the past, this tributary of the Dart was wooded with Oak trees. Not so now. The oaks have gone, although there is a sprinkle of other shrubs and small trees, including willow, edging the valley bottom. It also tells us that this area was being used for tin extraction before the date of 1240 AD, and that these tin works were ‘Dryworkes’; a dry work being tin working of surficial deposits, found at the base of slopes and dry valley bottoms , as opposed to streamworks, where the tin is found in stream or river channels and floodplains. 7. Horse Ford constructed for himself a rough-and-ready shelter and, leaving his family at home, betook himself to the labour of building a primitive family dwelling. A single Storey, two-roomed house with a fireplace at each end.’ Hemery 1983 p338 The open, windswept upland moors are characterised by large expanses of grass and heather, peat blanket bogs and valley mires. These provide habitats for wildlife such as skylark, meadow pipit, common lizards and fox moth caterpillars.

Nun's Cross Farm is an old farmhouse that is enriched with stories of intrigue and mystery, as well as much of the land surrounding it. After another 300 metres, pass through the second gate and follow the path all the way to Nun’s Cross across the open moor. I'm excited to partner with History Hit to showcase some of my favourites - just in time for Halloween. But as he [Ordulf II] had directed certain legacies to be given to the church [at Horton] with his body, his wish was frustrated by violence of abbot Sihtric, who carried off both gifts and giver to his own monastery“. Finberg, 1946 Nun’s Cross Farm is a well known landmark on the ‘high Moor’ to most of us Dartmoor trekkers. The Dartmoor Rescue Group have used to as a base to co-ordinate call-outs on the Southern Moor and is currently used as a temporary bunk-house and can even be hired out.

The Dartmoor crosses are a series of stone crosses found in Dartmoor National Park in the centre of Devon, England. Many of them are old navigational aids, needed because of the remoteness of the moorland and its typically bad weather. Some mark medieval routes between abbeys. [1] Other crosses were erected as memorials, for prayer, as town or market crosses, in churchyards, and as boundary markers. [2] The crosses were erected over a long period of time, some as recently as 100 years ago, the earliest probably almost 1,000 years ago.

With all three crosses seemingly in their original locations, this shows a wayside density greater than most other stretches. Is is possible their desolate location is a factor in their preservation? Maybe this hints that, before the reformation, this monastic route was lined with many more crosses than we are left with today; the fate of others being damaged, pulled down re-used as lintels and gateposts. 5. Skir Gert The infamous Fox Tor mire in the vicinity of the cross became an inspiration for the Grimpen Mire, which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described in his The Hound of the Baskervilles. [20] Nun's or Siward's Cross [ edit ] Siward's cross Competitors are responsible for their own personal safety and for assessing their own abilities to complete the course. The open moorland results from a long history of human management and its diversity is maintained by cattle, pony and sheep grazing. On clear days in the distance you can see Plymouth Sound.

From Fernworthy Forest to Wistman's Wood, Nun's Cross, The Dewerstone, and many more - Dartmoor really does have some spooky-looking scenes, and some of them are wreathed in legend. Finberg, summarising Wiliam of Malmesbury, describes this later Ordulf (who he refers to as Ordul II), as a man of great strength and gigantic stature, who was also passionately fond of the chase. He explains that … Event day John and Myself met at 0730 to wake up controls for SIAC it was 100m visibility in the fog and heavy occasional showers in a very strong wind. All controls were good to go but due to the rain and a leat overflow in flood for safety reasons we decided to cancel the Yellow course. It was also decided on cagoules and whistles being compulsory. All runners must be aware that Orienteering can be hazardous, and they compete at own risk. MiscellaneousWhat is a common trait between a person with a lisp and a nun? They both have a fondness for the Faith book. Sorry there is no White course. Our planner has worked hard to include a Yellow course on this area and we would advise that parents shadow children entering this course to ensure their safety whilst competing, or at the very least stay close by the finish to monitor their safe return and wear appropriate clothing for the wait and weather. It affords indeed a beautiful example of the way a popular tradition may at once preserve and disguise matter of authentic fact.” Finberg,1946 Halloween is just around the corner, and here in Devon, we have some of the most spooky places right on our doorstep - many of them on Dartmoor.
